TripAdvisor Launches High-End Hotel Deals Site

A subsidiary of TripAdvisor has launched SniqueAway.com, a site that combines the company's highly-reviewed hotels with special deals on those properties.

A member of PCMag.com's Top 100 Classic Web Sites of 2008, TripAdvisor has been known for its large member base, which publish unvarnished reviews of hotels all over the world. SniqueAway promises that the deals offered on its site will be offered only to those hotels that earn a minimum four-star rating classification and a minimum four out of five TripAdvisor review rating.

There's a catch, though: the private-sale site will be restricted to a limited group of members, who will be allowed to invite their own friends to partake of the deals. The site is accepting new members, although there is a waiting list, a site spokeswoman said. Technically, the site is owned by Smarter Travel Media, which in turn is owned by TripAdvisor Media Group and by TripAdvisor LLC.

"We are letting our members decide how big the community becomes, just like we are letting the people tell us which hotels we should feature," David Krauter, the general manager of SniqueAway, added in an email. "Occasionally, we will let folks off the wait list as well, but access is not immediately guaranteed."

The discounts are only available if the site's membership is kept small, representatives said.

Although the site launched Tuesday, none of the deals are actually on offer; instead, the site simply displayed the hotels on which SniqueAway would offer the deals, and when. And for now, the fare is decidedly limited: beginning Sept. 20, SniqueAway will offer discounts on three hotels: The Reefs, in Bermuda; The Greenbrier, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia; and the Intercontinental Hotel in Boston.

Sales usually start at noon Eastern time on the day of the sale, and will expire as soon as the rooms are sold or seven days have expired, whichever comes first. The next round of deals will begin a week later; users have the option of signing up for a weekly newsletter that previews the following week's deals.

When a deal is live, the individual deal will link to room rates, amenities, and TripAdvisor reviews - all features that hadn't yet gone live.

PCMag.com was offered an invitation to the site to explore it. Members, however, also receive an additional perk; if they send out an invitation to a friend, who signs up and purchases a deal, the original referrer receives a $25 credit.

To avoid a conflict of interest, however, PCMag.com requested a generic membership link to offer readers: SniqueAway.com/invite/PCMagazine, through which users can sign up. (Unfortunately, flying to and staying at a Bermuda hotel isn't really feasible on a reporter's salary, anyway.)

Doing so won't necessarily bump you higher in the waiting list, though. And it's unclear what will happen if a hotel's reputation with TripAdvisor readers wanes.

What can do the Xoom Motorola for Google?

I'll admit. I am not a big football fan. I do everything in it. And the Superbowl? Unless the Patriots or the Seahawks in it, I am only looking for ads. OK, even if the Pats or the Seahawks are in it, I am always looking for ads. Which rabbitbrush much this year. Great. One that I couldn't help but like? Motorola ad for the Xoom. He made me laugh. He made me say: "" take, Steve."" I was even want a Xoom.

I'm not sure you could get a more direct attack on Apple and their ecosystem iOS. If a Xoom exploded in the hands of Steve Jobs, but otherwise, this commercial did perhaps some prisoners.

The Xoom will be an iPad killer? Probably not. The iPad is simply too entrenched. However, as the first incursion major market Tablet powered by nest bee and, without doubt, the strongest competitor to the iPad, the Xoom is an extremely important for Google product. Google, after all, sell phones or tablets. The breakup of retail link took care of this one. They sell even their operating system mobile. It is open source. And yet, Google repeatedly identifies mobile as absolutely essential to their strategy.

Google relies instead on the deployment of equipment really convincing operates under Android compelling apps and compelling interfaces and OEMs to ensure that millions of people are looking through Google while they are mobile, and to ensure that their AdWords platform reaches mobile wherever possible clients. The Xoom strikes three serious sectors. It doesn't have to be an iPad killer. It must simply be a worthy competitor iPad.

What can do the Xoom for Google? It can be quite good that people think is more automatically iPad when they feel compressed. Well cooked SuperBowl advertising is not anything is wrong.

Certification program approves Google Apps resellers

Google has created a mechanism for subscribing to its Google Apps products resellers.

In a blog note, the company said launched program Certification Google Apps, allowing it professionals to identify themselves as "demonstrated basic knowledge and skills required to migrate, configure and deploy Google Apps."

Become a certified implies a review online resellers must take to prove that they know about Google Apps. In his post, the company cited Jon Hallett, CEO of cloud Sherpas, Google Apps authorized reseller. He said:

We continue to build our Google Apps overall practice, it is essential for us to differentiate us and obtain recognition of the great depth of expertise Apps, we have developed with so many customers. Certification Google Apps program will help attract the interest of the new client by highlighting our commitment to provide highest value consultation of market services.

Mobile News blogger for ZDNet, James Kendrick, presented plans for Google to hire a mobile application top development talent. Mobile applications, of course, circumvent this issue, allowing experiments on small flashless screens.

Interestingly, however, the majority of the use of data on mobile phones comes real web browsing. Mobile access to data and information is still the primary use for these devices (tablets, elsewhere) case. People can be downloaded billions (literally) apps, but they still spend extraordinary amounts of time simply in line with their phones.

And if the web experience could be as rich as native application experience? A look on Google (and Microsoft and Zoho, among others) has done to replicate, and in some respects, progress, productivity, software as a service on the web shows that the visible tip of the iceberg when it comes to rich web applications.

Anyone who has had the opportunity to use Chrome OS or accessing online shop web applications Chrome knows sophisticated applications are quite possible of in the browser, the best that can be distinguished from native OS applications. As this technology trickles to the mobile (or, more likely, perhaps is advanced by the mobile space), and HTML5 makes web applications on all possible platforms that could previously only achieved with Flash, users will be more more not care if accessing functionality via a browser or native application. Both will look great and work harmoniously.

Adobe said that Flash would be huge... When Apple will follow the lead Flash of Android?

Flash is a big problem. I know that HTML5 is the next best thing since sliced bread, and we can all do wonderful things with AJAX and Javascript (and Java, in fact) and CSS. But when it comes right down, if you want to code up to a high-impact, media-rich, seriously interactive site, you are likely to turn to Flash.

Adobe has used Mobile World Congress this week in Barcelona to highlight the continuing trend towards the use of Flash, especially on mobile platforms despite the refusal of Apple move on Flash support in Ios. According to ReadWriteWeb.

Thanks in large part to the rise of Android adoption Flash devices overcame Adobe earlier forecasts. Earlier last year Adobe MAX Developer Conference, Adobe had planned 9% of mobile phones support Flash in 2010, but at the end of the year, the actual number is 12%.

And this is not just Android. Android, certainly not even the first platform to support Flash (that honor actually goes to Windows Mobile), while it leads the market by a significant share at present. Windows Phone 7, RIM BlackBerry OS and WebOS HP now or will soon support Flash on their mobile phones than anything, from YouTube to hardware acceleration on the web games latest are supported on all major mobile platforms. Except, of course, iOS.

There is no Flash on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch. Many applications rich and wonderful, but a lot of boxes empty on many websites. Of course, many of those who empty boxes desired you spank a monkey and to download malicious software in any way, but Flash remains a dominant force on the interactive Web. Apple argues that Flash in inherently insecure, while its desktop and portable products are supported for years.

So when Apple finally jump on the train? If Flash is not a universal standard, it is as close you can get for multimedia web. The kind of ongoing development of Flash Media Server, desktop, or mobile devices targeting is quite convincing. Audio and video real-time collaboration? Check. High-performance web game? Check. 3D visualization and modeling? Check. Another death knells for the desktop computer? Check.

I give Apple every year until they cave. Tablets Android is just too cool and too useful for entertainment and enterprise applications is they do not.

Your bolt sleeping online: Google opens 2-step audit all users

An account Google will soon be an invitation to the opt-in for verification 2 steps SignOn offered by the company, a deadbolt which makes it more difficult for someone to hack into your account online.

The feature has been available for client applications and is now available to all account holders, adds a second step to enter a code which is sent to mobile phone user - either via phone call, SMS text, or a smartphone application. In doing so, Google increases the likelihood that the account holder is the person who seeks to enter into account.

There is a process that users have to activate the feature, which is a good thing. Functionality be enabled on default accounts. Users have to go take care of that. Similarly, users will have to reflect on their scenarios and what makes sense - as allowing sign-ins on a specific computer using the same code for 30 days. And you will need to come up with a backup and backup code telephone number where the main phone is lost or damaged.

Don't forget: we want not only to say email here. These accounts include Google Docs, calendar, Picasa, Blogger and a number of other properties.

Google faces a fair share of critics who have questioned attitude society on privacy. It's way to Google for spinning again on users to take their own recognizance.

It is of course a minor disadvantage of having to check your connection with mobile phone code attempt. But it uses a second key to unlock the deadbolt on your front door. But imagine the opportunity that you give a bad guy just because you're not willing to invest a few seconds extra.

One of the features missing from the Word 2007 ribbon is a command to let you scan an image directly into a Word file. If you can remember the Word 2003 command, however, you'll find that it works in Word 2007 also: Insert | Picture | From Scanner or Camera, or the keystrokes: Alt-I, P, S.

Yet another option is to go to the Insert ribbon, choose Clip Art, and at the bottom of the Clip Art pane, choose Organize clips. Then, on the Clip Organizer menu, choose File | Add Clips to Organizer | From Scanner or Camera. Scan the image into Clip Organizer, then use the Insert | Clip Art option to insert the scan into the document.

Times are still tough out there, but our needs and desires don't always flag just because the economy does. If an accident or an equipment failure has punched an unexpected hole in your computing life, you may be in need of a system—any system—to fill it. Or maybe you've discovered that your family just needs one more box to use as a Web terminal to keep the more powerful systems free more often. Whatever the circumstance, you may be tempted to drop $500 or even more on one of the cheaper, pre-fab models you can find at Costco, Wal-Mart, or from one of the major manufacturers. But once you've factored in all the attendant costs, taxes, and shipping, you could be spending a lot more than you planned—and that's something to avoid, especially when every penny counts.

Even if you need a computer right away, there are plenty of good reasons to build one rather than buy one. You control the parts, so you get exactly what you need at the price you can best afford. You're assured of being able to upgrade any (or all) of the pieces later, when you have more money to spend. And, perhaps most importantly, you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself and maintaining complete control over it from the very instant you open the boxes. No matter how little you want to drop, building your own computer is still the best way to go.

So we asked ourselves: What's the lowest point at which these two goals could intersect? If we needed a simple computer right away, and wanted to spend as little as possible, what could we build? We knew we wanted to aim low, almost ridiculously low—so we decided on what seemed like almost an unthinkable total: $200, which would include everything needed for the base computer itself (but not counting the monitor, keyboard, and mouse, or tax and shipping charges).

Once we had our target price, we took to Newegg.com to see whether this could really be done. We spent hours researching all the possibilities, making swaps, compromises, and last-minute changes until we had all the parts for our impossibly inexpensive system that, amazingly, came in under budget.

We had met our goal—on paper. But there's a lot more to any computer than just how it looks on a Web site or in the cells of an Excel spreadsheet. We needed to make sure the computer would meet our needs, and not be stuck functioning as a big steel paperweight. Read on for the details about how we built one of the least expensive computers we've seen, while learning a lot more than we expected about the difficulties of component shopping, the importance of knowing what you need (and what you're willing to settle for), and the knowledge that what you get can sometimes be considerably more than just what you see.

I live in argentina and $200 bucks is too much but any ways electronics get here too overpriced you can buy a decent office PC for that money (but pirate windows and everithing onboard single core processor 1 GB memory and HD 160 GB)

I spent that much keeping my 5 year old Athlon 64 system running last month.

Long story short I thought I needed a new power supply, so I got a new one. While I was at the store, I decided to get a cheap Nvidia card, because Linux hated my old Radeon 9500 pro. (Plus the fan was shot anyway). And I decided to splurge for a new SATA hard drive.

After getting everything together, I found out that the motherboard was dying, not the P.S. Not having much money, I went online and found a used $35 board that I could put all of my components on. When that was installed, I found out that it was an old Gateway board that had disabled the SATA in the BIOS, with no BIOS available that enabled it. So I spent another $50 for an external USB/ESATA enclosure for the new drive.

Total spent on a 5 year old system: about $220.

Well this looks like a good winter project . I went to locate the parts mentioned in the report . Pulled up egghead and found that the case r424bk was no longer stocked , the memory only came in a 3 pack and the cpu did not come with a heat sink or fan . This added a lot to the 200 dollar price . If anyone can tell me about sub . parts please post

Market Android now offer malicious software as well as angry birds update?

The biggest news at honeycomb Google event last week was not UI honeycomb, but rather as the Android Market Update. The market is now on the web, making it totally convenient to install applications on all of your devices Android, from a PC or one of the devices. Rovio is at the forefront of making the problem of fragmentation of the Android platform moot, paving the way for the sort of massive deployments described above across heterogeneous devices.

Of course, new market on the Google web has the potential for users to be stupid and wrong people to do bad things. It also has the potential for households to manage all their facilities app easily and economically, for companies to be really able to manage deployments Android really forcing ways. Change your password, folks. It will be useful for 30 seconds to be able to use Android unique functionality and its app model.

How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 9

If you've installed the Internet Explorer 9 Beta browser, you'll know that it replaces Internet Explorer 8, and that the two cannot run side by side. The new browser does offer plenty of advantages over its predecessors—speed, uncluttered design, and more standard support—but there are still some reasons you may want IE8 back. For example, a favorite site doesn't look quite right (Flickr slideshows are a good example). Or maybe you have work web apps that require an earlier version. (Ironically, our content management system works better in IE9 than it did in IE8).

Unlike the IE9 Platform Preview (which you could run side by side with a previous version), IE9 is installed as a Windows Update, rather than a separate app. This means it won't show up in Control Panel's Programs\Programs and Features list unless you click the "View installed updates" link at the top left of the Control Panel.

After this, the easiest way to find the IE9 update is to type "Explorer" (without the quoatation marks) in the Control Panel's search bar at top right, and the IE9 update will appear as the only showing entry. Double click this, and a confirmation dialog will ask if you want to uninstall the browser. You don't have to download and install IE8—it will magically reappear as your IE version.

The same process works for both Windows 7 and Vista, but in the latter you'll see entries for both IE8 and IE9 in list in Programs and Features.

Sync Calendar Between BlackBerry/iPad/Android/Mac?

As the mobile-device analyst, I get a lot of questions about syncing stuff. It's a problem! Everyone wants to have their information on whatever device they're using — whether it's an iPad, BlackBerry, iPhone or whatever.

This week's Ask an Analyst question comes from Sarah, who asks, "Is there a way to transfer and/or sync a calendar from a blackberry to the ipad?"

Also, Duncan asks, "How do you sync a Mac using Microsoft Entourage to the Droid X?"

If you're trying to transfer contacts and calendars between two devices, going via Google is a good bet. Google's Mobile Sync app runs on BlackBerries, iPhones, Symbian and Windows phones. Android phones, of course, sync with Google right out of the box.

So the quick answer to Sarah's question is: Google Mobile Sync. Run it on the BlackBerry and set up the iPad using Google's instructions, and you'll be able to sync a calendar between the two devices.

Duncan's answer is a little more complicated. He has to use Apple's Address Book and iCal apps as intermediaries. I'm assuming he's using Mac OS X 10.6 and Entourage 2008.

In Entourage's Preferences, under Sync Services, there are options to sync Entourage with Address Book and iCal. In those apps' preferences, under Accounts, you can add Google accounts to sync that data further on to Google. Then it will show up on your Droid.

Earlier this year we did a story on syncing Android phones with various apps on your Mac or PC, and the comments thread there offers suggestions for more third-party solutions. One solution we didn't like was The Missing Sync for Android, which we found kludgey and difficult to use.

Chrome extension: users can clean their search results, Google alert for possible spammers

If you find more spam in your Google search results that care you, there is now an extension for the browser Chrome that not only allows users to block sites from their personalized results, but also helps Google identify some of the worst offenders of search engine manipulation.

It is part of the battle of Google with strong content, sites with shallow or low quality content that have a primary purpose of generating web traffic sent via Google results. Lately, Google has tried to stay one step ahead on sites that they degrade the results of research trying to deceive their way in a ranking higher on results pages. In a note to blog today, the company said extension could contribute to this effort.

Manipulation of research may not necessarily unlawful results but it is certainly frowned upon - and may incur the wrath of Google.

The launch of the expansion comes days after that the New York Times exposed what appeared to be an attempt by large-scale retailer JC Penney to manipulate results for searches of common elements in its stores, such as carpets, luggage, and bedding. While JC Penney denies forming part of an effort to flood the Web with links to its site on the pages of content farm-like pages, the company told the NYT that he drew from his search engine consulting firm.

In the meantime, Google has pushed JC Penney back down in the results of research for a large number of these requests a gesture that could qualify for an adjustment of results and others could display more as a sanction against JC Penney to try to manipulate Google.

While the advantages of the extension could extend only to users of it at the outset, Google says that it send also warning flags to engineers from Google, giving them another set of eyeballs to monitor queries a billion Google deals with on a daily basis.

The extension of Chrome, called blocking personal, is now available for download.

SMB Innovator: String Theory YoYo Bounces Back

Bolstered by affordable software, social networking, and online video, Mark Mankiewicz's String Theory YoYo has carved out a successful niche selling premium yo-yos.

One slow evening, Mark Mankiewicz, a 26-year-old support manager at Alibre, a 3D software development company in Dallas, TX, watched a TV program that detailed how yo-yos can be effective stress relievers. Intrigued by this new spin on the classic American toy, Mark decided to delve back into the world of one of his childhood pastimes. Through online forums and a world of yo-yo-crazy YouTubers, he quickly learned that his childhood hobby had developed into quite a dynamic pursuit with its own professional leagues. In short, there was tremendous opportunity for a new business to serve the thriving yo-yo community.

Despite his current position, Mankiewicz comes from a finance background—not engineering—and had long dreamed of owning his own business. Taking advantage of his company's simple, straightforward and relatively cheap 3D engineering software, Mankiewicz decided it was time to launch a yo-yo business.

He founded String Theory YoYo in July 2009 and four months later released his first yo-yo, "The Remnant," priced at $85. The name String Theory YoYo appeals to Mark's target demographic, "the higher intellectual type of kids who are into physics," plus it makes a nice play on the yo-yo string. And while yo-yo is the traditional spelling, originally patented by Duncan, a brand name in yo-yo making, Mankiewicz uses YoYo without the hyphen to increase SEO exposure. Mankiewicz, who works on his small business from the time he gets home from the office and into the early morning hours, no longer has slow evenings.

Social Yo-Yo
Mankiewicz sponsors the four players that comprise the official String Theory YoYo team: Team Captain Leo Qin (also known as "Fzzyrn" in online forums), Ian Bailey, Gary Li and Jameson Larkins, who attend yo-yo meet ups on the weekends at their local community centers. Occasionally, Mankiewicz will attend the meet-ups as well, handing out stickers and felt bags for players to carry their yo-yos in. String Theory YoYo sponsors national competitions across the US, and international competitions in Moscow, Russia.

Like any wise businessperson, Mankiewicz utilizes social networking to help promote String Theory Yo Yo. He unveiled two new yo-yos aptly named "The Quark" and "The Singularity" on String Theory YoYo's Facebook page. The yo-yos (priced at $100, and $79, respectively) will be available for sale this Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010. Mankiewicz uses the String Theory YoYo Facebook page to send daily updates to over 200 fans, but he's still trying to get the hang of Twitter, where you can find the company at http://twitter.com/StringTheoryYo.

"I'm not a big fan of Twitter because you can only use so many characters," he said. "I feel like I'm witnessing the death of the English language when I'm on it, so instead I focus on using Facebook."

Mankiewicz also engages hardcore yo-yo fans in online forums such as YoYoNation, where the chatter is all about collector edition yo-yos, tricks that people can perform, and ways to gussy-up the toys. Some of the forums (such as YoYoNation.com, 1DropYoYos.com, yoyoexpert.com, and theyo.com) double as retail outlets. Mark tracks these sites and reads through threads about his yo-yos. "We've received great feedback on the two to three websites that specialize in reviewing YoYos, including highspeedyoyos.com and yoyoskills.com," he said.

Viral Videos
Online video also plays a significant role in promotion. Mark's team has received thousands of views on the YouTube and Vimeo channels that feature their videos.

"Our four sponsored yo-yoers upload videos constantly," said Mark. "I really like them to embrace their personality in their videos so I don't give them too much instruction." The resulting product is a myriad of inspired videos that are fun and creative featuring cool, hip songs.

The videos have proven successful in that String Theory Yo Yo sells two to three yo-yos within a day or two of releasing a new video. The company is currently working on a video for the upcoming Tedx SMU conference, an idea and information conference in which 350 7th to 9th grade students get a hour of free hour attendance in exchange for completing four hours of community service.

Manufacturing 2.0
Mankiewicz uses Alibre software to design his yo-yos, which recently won the Maker Faire "Editor's Choice" 2010 Award. Mark uses the standard software to design the parts of the String Theory YoYos in 3D.

Mankiewicz founded String Theory YoYo at the same time that Alibre decided to drop the price point on their standard design software from $1,000 to an unprecedented $99. J. Paul Grayson, the Chairman and CEO of Alibre says the decision to do so was made in response to a sagging economy and "the belief that a lot of talented people who may have lost their jobs would be looking for ways to go off on their own and start a small business."

The $99 price tag turned out to be a sticking point for a lot of people. Since the price drop, the number of units ordered quadrupled and Alibre experienced record revenues. CEO Grayson believes Alibre's price "enables ordinary people to take their ideas and dreams and turn them into real, physical products and companies." Mankiewicz is a prime example.

"There isn't better software out there that lets me create drawings and send them to a machinist as easily," adds Mankiewicz. "From a parametric background, Alibre is just a lot easier to pick up and use." The software contains everything Mark needs to create the yo-yo's 3D parts and then he sends the 2D drawings to his machinist, who builds the String Theory YoYos.

Through MFG.com (an online evaluation tool for engineers to compare suppliers like machine shops, molders, fabricators, extruders, metal casters and contract manufacturers), Mankiewicz discovered Major Machines, a manufacturing company out of Conway, SC.

"MFG.com was a big enabler for me," says Mankiewicz. "I used to pay a lot for parts, but when I received a quote from Major Machines, they halved my original cost, enabling my business to remain competitive. And they are based in the U.S.A. It was a win-win situation."

It could be said that Mark Mankiewicz got into the yo-yo biz at the right time: a built-in audience, social media tools, and affordable software assisted in making his dream of being a business owner a reality. Still, you can't overlook the hard work that went into building the company from the ground up.

The information is almost identical to its free counterpart so its only worth shelling out $4.00 if you are a kid-toting Dad or just slightly OCD. The Max option provides radar maps of the next six hours, beach conditions, and traffic cams with video streaming, all ad-free.

Weather Alert ($1.99 on the iPhone)

WeatherAlert is pretty simple. Simply tick off certain weather notifications you'd like to receive and the app will send you push notification style alerts for your area such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, floods, etc.

Disaster Caster ($0.99 on the iPhone)

This easy to use app could help you stay clearheaded in case of an earthquake, hurricane or another extreme weather event. It allows you to send a pre-programmed disaster plan to your family and friends and forward your location via e-mail based on your phone's GPS. (Assuming you still have cell phone service in the event of an earthquake.)

Best Smartphone With Keyboard and Touch Screen?

One of the biggest debates I hear as the cell phone guy at PCMag.com is: QWERTY keyboard or touch screen? In this week's Ask an Analyst, I help a reader who wants the best of both worlds.

This week's question comes from Andrew, who writes via e-mail that he wants a phone with both a physical keyboard and a touch screen. Ideally, he'd like it to look a lot like the HTC Touch Pro2. Why aren't manufacturers producing more of these combo-style smartphones?

The combo form factor is actually pretty popular, but combo phones are more expensive and more complicated to build than slab-style devices. To get both a functional touch screen and a QWERTY keyboard on a pocketable device, it generally needs to slide. That means a potentially troublesome mechanical part. A few phones, such as the Palm Pixi and Motorola Charm, have pulled off the screen/keyboard combo in a slab design, but their touch screens tend to be really small.

The Touch Pro2 had an unusual screen which tilted up. The only smartphone I know of with that design right now is the Nokia N97 Mini, which I have trouble recommending because it's otherwise slow and buggy.

The upcoming T-Mobile G2 from HTC doesn't tilt, but it inherits some of the Touch Pro2's DNA.

The best QWERTY keyboard on a smart phone is the 5-row monster on the Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint. I also really like the Motorola Droid 2 on Verizon Wireless and the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide on T-Mobile. And I know it isn't going to interest Andrew, but I'd like to mention the BlackBerry Torch 9800, which combines the much-beloved BlackBerry keyboard with a touch screen. I think Andrew likes landscape-format phones, and the Torch is portrait-style.

Some ISPs add annoying branding to the title lines of their Internet Explorer browsers, such as "Provided by Comcast." Why Can't I Change Carriers With The Same Phone?

Cell phone carriers try to lock you in by forcing you to buy a new phone if you want to switch. In this week's Ask an Analyst, I help a reader who wants to change carriers but can't get his new cell phone carrier to accept his old phone.

This week's question comes from Alexander in Phiadelphia, who writes: "I brought a Blackberry Curve 8530 from Verizon and now I want to go to MetroPCS who sell the same exact phone. Why do I need to buy another Curve [just] because it reads MetroPCS?"

There's a long answer and a short answer. You're busy, so let me give you the short answer first. MetroPCS and Verizon use different radio frequencies in Philly, and Verizon phones don't have the right chips and antennas to tune to MetroPCS's channel. So your BlackBerry can't "hear" the MetroPCS signal.

The Long Answer
Here's the long answer. First of all, this answer applies only to the USA. The rest of the world works differently.

Wireless carriers don't want you to switch, so they don't make it easy for you to bring over a phone from another carrier. To be able to move a phone between carriers, you need three things:

1. The two phones must be the same radio technology.
2. The two phones must use the same frequency bands.
3a. If the phone is GSM, it must be unlocked.
3b. If the phone is CDMA, your new carrier must accept it.

Let's go through them one by one.

1. US wireless carriers use three different 2G/3G radio technologies.

GSM: AT&T, T-Mobile
CDMA: Verizon, Sprint 3G, US Cellular, MetroPCS and Cricket
iDEN: The old Nextel/Boost

You can't move a phone between these technologies—it's like trying to get an AM radio to tune to FM. (There are a few phones that have two of the technologies above, but let's just let that slide for now.)

2. Carriers also use different 2G/3G frequency bands.

850/1900 Mhz: Everyone, here and there
1700 Mhz: T-Mobile 3G (everywhere), Cricket and MetroPCS (some cities only)

If your phone doesn't have the right frequency band, it won't work on the new carrier. That's why many Verizon phones won't work with MetroPCS in some cities, and why AT&T phones can only get 2G on T-Mobile.

Rest assured, by the way, that things will get even more complicated with 4G, which adds two more technologies and two more frequency bands. But most people trying to switch carriers are concerned with 3G right now.

3. GSM phones from US carriers usually come locked ... but if you can get someone to unlock the phone, it'll work on another GSM carrier. That's how people have iPhones working on T-Mobile (albeit without 3G, as the iPhone doesn't have T-Mobile's 1700 Mhz 3G band.) Sometimes your carrier will unlock a phone on request; sometimes you have to find a third party who can unlock it for you.

But for the CDMA carriers, the receiving carrier has to accept the phone. Verizon and Sprint simply refuse to allow any phones they don't sell on to their network. Sorry, buddy. No way. MetroPCS is more charitable, with a program called "MetroFlash" that will re-orient other CDMA carriers' phones to MetroPCS's software, as long as the phone has the right frequency bands.

Even if you do manage to move your phone between carriers, carrier-provided services like music stores and the carrier's GPS navigation program may not work on your new carrier. For many people, that's not much of a loss, and there are usually third-party replacements for these things. But it's a consideration.

If you don't want to give your email address to the recipient, you can use one of several websites like http://www.textsendr.com that do the same thing.

Too bad Teleflip went away. Teleflip allowed you to just send the number@teleflip.com and it will automatically route the e-mail to the appropriate carrier. That way you didn't have to remember or know what carrier each number belonged to.

I believe solicitation via cell phone is still illegal correct? Let us hope so....
If free to the recipient I would not have a problem with this nor would other folks I'm sure.. Pretty cool stuff if used properly.......
But somehow there is an underlying price to be paid, either by sender or recipient.
Correct me if I'm wrong?

How to Wipe Blackberry Data

Here at PCMag we are always testing new products. When we're done, we have to—sigh—send them back. Even this lovely BlackBerry Torch 9800 (pictured here) has to go back to Research in Motion. However, I can't just pack it up and send it back to RIM—it has all of my data and settings. What I want to do is wipe the phone out. This means killing the application and personal data, and even wiping my stored files off the media card if I choose.

This method, by the way has remained fairly consistent throughout most recent BlackBerry models. On the Torch, you select "Options", and then find "Security". There you'll find an option for "Security Wipe". By default, E-mail, Contacts and User Installed Apps are pre-selected. The Media Card option, however, is not. If you want, you can connect the Blackberry to your PC and open the Media card folder just as you would any other removable media. Once you've transferred everything over, you should feel free to select the Media Card for erasure, as well.

Before you can wipe the phone, however, you have to type in "blackberry" in the field next to the Wipe Data button. Next you'll see the rather dire message: "Erasing Information…Warning: Do not pull the battery out until erasing is complete. This is followed by a "Wiping" progress bar. This can take a few minutes, so keep busy with some other task until it's done.

Google Docs dressed, improves the Organisation of files and filtering

Google Docs homepage has been given a facelift - and the keys to the best organization of your sheets, documents, presentations, and even photos and videos are a system group called Collections and a filtering system which can be refined by type, visibility and sharing.

And, of course, you can always still search.

For just about a year now, users were able to download virtually any type of file in Google Docs, which creates a better system for the Organization and the location of these files. Google took "Records," integrated "tags" system used in Gmail and changed the name of Collections. Files live in several collections and via the right click button, users can control what is visible where: stars, adding to hide the home page and so forth.

Three features that I like best:

A new way to select multiple files for a lot of change to caps or CTL/CMD + click functionality. The path to the precedent of those pesky boxes which had marked a single file at a time, has disappeared.New preview pane on the right side of the screen gives the user information about the file, including its location, its sharing settings and information about versions. And when a video file playing, the clip can play directly from the preview player.Viewer slide show of photos, which provides a larger preview of an image file and creates a film through the bottom with other images in this collection.

As always, Google will implement the new Docs look in the coming days, with the first wave underway today.

It's not unusual for a non-administrator user to find that he or she can't print to a network printer, even though an administrator on the same system can. There are a number of possible causes, but one definitely worth checking is whether your printer installs a proprietary network port.

To find out, open the Printers and Faxes dialog box (in Windows XP) or the Printers dialog box (in Vista). Right-click on the printer name, choose Properties, and then the Ports tab. If the port description shows as anything but Standard TCP/IP Port, changing the choice to Standard TCP/IP Port may solve the problem. But make sure to note which check box was originally selected, in case you need to restore the setting.

I have said that the Apple iPad is only good at two things, but it’s really good at those two things and I’ve compiled a list of my 20 favorite apps for taking advantage of the iPad’s strengths.

The best way to view this is the gallery of screenshots. However, you can also view it as a text-based list below.

It’s amazing how quickly this has become my most used app on the iPad, since it was just released in July. It displays news stories based on them being shared via Twitter or Facebook and auto-formats them in a newspaper-like column format. You can scan the headlines and first couple paragraphs and then click through to the site to the open the full story right in the built-in web browser in the app. (Tip: search for TechRepublic or Jason Hiner and you can set us up as one of your sections in Flipboard.)

The best way to read books on the iPad is the Amazon Kindle app, mostly because it has a large selection of titles available and it does the best job of syncing between multiple devices — iPad, iPhone, Android phone, PC, Mac, and more.

The best way to collect, manage, and read business documents on the iPad is with Dataviz Documents to Go, which not only allows you to sync local files from your computer but also connect to cloud services such as Google Docs, Dropbox, Box.net, SugarSync, and iDisk.

There are tons of different “to do list” managers for the iPad, but the one I prefer is ToDo. The UI makes it look like an old day-planner and it can do online sync with the Toodledo service.

Twitter’s official iPad app is the best way to access Twitter and is an example of the kind of imaginative new UIs that good developers will attempt once they get grounded in touch-based tablets like the iPad. Check out the way the Twitter app exposes more or less info by sliding left and right. (Other useful Twitter apps include Osfoora, Twitterific, and Tweetdeck.)

One of the great ways to take advantage of the iPad as a viewer is to use it for quick glances at business dashboard metrics (see QlikView, SBO Explorer, and Roambi). This even translates to the simple task of checking traffic metrics and user info for your website. If you use Google Analytics, the Analytics HD app is a great way to view site data from the iPad.

The iPad is a surprisingly good note taker. The keyboard is about 80% as good as a laptop keyboard but the convenience of a more portable device is valuable as well. Evernote is a great note taking companion for the iPad, since it can auto-sync your meeting notes back to your PCs and/or smartphones. Just keep in mind that it’s an online service and so be careful that you don’t use it for any business-sensitive data. For that stuff, you can use locally-controlled files with Apple’s built-in Notes app, for example.

Pulse is another iPad news aggregator like Flipboard, only instead of building its sections based on social feeds it uses RSS feeds. Like Flipboard, it presents the info in a visually-compelling format using images from the articles that it is linking to. You can use the RSS feeds for TechRepublic and/or Tech Sanity Check if you’d like to use Pulse to keep up with the latest posts.

Another great news aggregator for the iPad is SkyGrid, but its specialty is pulling together news on hot trends in real time. It’s not nearly as visual as Flipboard or Pulse, but SkyGrid helps fill in the gaps by surfacing hot news that might have been missed by your favorite RSS sources and your social network.

ProPublica, a non-profit publication of investigative reporters, is doing some of the most important work in journalism today — the work that has increasingly been cut out of the profit-driven newsrooms. Plus, they have an excellent iPad app. The three column layout gives you the latest stories from ProPublica (most of which don’t make the mainstream news), the middle column links to good investigative news pieces from the mainstream media (many of the stories are buried), and the third columns has ProPublica’s “Projects” or groups of stories where you can stay up to date on on-going issues such as the Gulf oil spill. Keep in mind that ProPublica is non-profit and funded completely by donations.

Another one of the best iPad news apps from a media organization is the NPR app. It lets you quickly skim top stories, read related text articles, and quickly add stories to a playlist that you can then listen to all at once.

The Times offers a selection of its top 10-12 stories in six different sections (news, business, technology, opinion, arts, and features). It has a very clean UI that maintains the look of the traditional newspaper and includes a mix of stories from Times reporters along with wire feeds from the A.P. and Reuters.

While The New York Times only gives you a selection of top stories, the USA Today offers virtually all of its stories in digital format on the iPad, and in a layout that reflects the newspaper’s design but is also optimized for a digital experience on the iPad. Plus, the company recently restructured to put greater emphasis on digital content and devices such as the iPad, so we should expect more of USA Today’s best content, graphics, and photos to make their way into the iPad app.

A real diamond in the rough among iPad apps is The Guardian Eyewitness, which features amazing world news photography from the popular UK newspaper. Another great world news photo app is The Big Picture from Boston.com.

Unlike the iPhone, the iPad does not come with a built-in weather app. However, The Weather Channel has filled the void with an excellent app that takes advantage of the tablet interface. I’ve never been a big fan of The Weather Channel’s desktop PC widgets, but they’ve done a great job with the iPad app.

Let’s face it, most of us geeks love space. The iPad itself was, in part, inspired by science fiction such as Star Trek. NASA has a strong tradition of sharing its space exploration advances and research and they’ve continued that tradition in multi-touch style with an excellent iPad app that lets you explore photography from satellites, see NASA’s launch schedules, research historical information about missions, and watch NASA TV live.

I’m a big Netflix nerd. I use it a lot for watching documentaries and old TV series (like Star Trek: Voyager and the IT Crowd), so I’m thrilled that there’s an iPad app. It lets me watch movies and shows (on-demand) when I’m traveling instead of getting gouged by the pay-per-view fees in hotels. As I said in my article, The truth about iPad: It’s only good for two things, I’m not crazy about watching video on the iPad but Netflix is causing me to warm up to it as it makes more and more content available for streaming. My only complaint about the Netflix app is that it doesn’t have iPad-specific functionality for queue management. It just takes you to the standard Netflix website and the drag-and-drop functionality in queue management doesn’t work very well because the AJAX code is meant to work with a mouse. (Keep in mind that this app requires a Netflix subscription.)

Like Netflix, Hulu can stream video content from the major studios to your iPad. While Netflix leans more toward movies, Hulu leans more toward TV shows. The two have some overlapping content, but not a lot. You need a Hulu Plus membership ($9.99/month) to get the content, which includes a lot more back titles and not just the most current stuff, which you can get for free at Hulu.com (although it won’t work on iPad because it uses Flash).

This famous iPad/iPhone game (now available on Android as well) is highly addictive, even if it is silly and vapid. I’m not going to try to explain it here if you don’t know anything about it, just know that it’s a very simple game to play but actually involves some minimal strategy that makes it pretty fun. I don’t play it that much, but I definitely use it to distract my four year old for up to 20-30 minutes at a time. She’s now better at it than anyone in the family.

I’ve been a Scrabble fan for a long time but hadn’t pulled out a board in a while when the game suddenly saw a revival in recent years in digital form, including several knock-offs such as Words with Friends. My favorite way to play digital Scrabble is the Pass’n Play mode on iPad. But the iPad also has an individual learning mode, a local network mode, Party Play (where you can use an iPhone or iPod Touch as a tile rack), and a mode where you can play against a Facebook friend.

As competition continues to ramp up in the set - top box space, TiVo may end up becoming more of a service, rather than a beg of lens, executives said this week.

In recent months, TiVo has agreed to deals with cable providers, either co-designing a cable box or providing the TiVO software to them either as part of a DVR or just the front-end interface.Customers have included Cox, DirecTV, Spain ' s WNW, NCR, and Suddenlink.

In part, that's because TiVo also faces increased competition from companies like Google, whose Google TV is due out this fall, as well as Boxee, whose Boxee Box is currently available for preorder at Amazon.

Both of those hardware devices provide access to online services like Amazon's s video-rental service and Netflix, capabilities that TiVo added years ago.Goal TiVo, which pioneered the DVR concept alongside ReplayTV, has also been mimicked by dozens of set - top boxes, branded by cable and satellite companies, that allow subscribers to record TV shows and movies and watch them when they wish. TiVo's answer to that has been its new Premiere DVR, qui a tied together live TV, DVR functionality, and the Internet services inside TiVo' s interface and search technology.TiVo Pandora added to the mix this week.

"You know, the software's our core competence, and if you look at some of the deals we' ve done, it ' s really the thing that we do well," Miller said. "And I don ' t think we lay around at night thinking of innovative design hardware." We use the hardware to render the service, which is the software.Software ' s in our blood; it ' s what we do well.

"I think the software is what we're all about and whether it' s the software that runs on our device," Miller added, noting that its TiVo Desktop runs on a PC, and partnerships with the U.K.'s Virgin Media and the Best Buy Insignia brand involve porting the TiVo software to the respective platforms.(The Best Buy partnership will include the TiVo interface, not DVR functionality, specific products and ship dates have yet to be announced.)

"So it will probably be never a knife edge where you ' re not in the hardware business, but the idea is that our software is designed to make other devices better," Miller added.

With Cox and Suddenlink, TiVo is offering its own Premiere lens to those services, in which Cox cable ' s box, will add a CableCard to allow access to its network. With NCR, both companies will offer a co-branded Premiere DVR that will tap into NCR ' s VoD library.Virgin and TiVo will co-develop Virgin ' s next-generation media platform, a development strategy that pioneered with DirecTV TiVo, which signed an agreement more than two years ago to co-develop what some have called a "DirecTiVo".

Unfortunately, since then, no. products have emerged from the partnership. TiVo said earlier this year that the DirecTiVo would ship in 2010. Goal when asked about the status of the agreement, Miller said that the DirecTiVo would ship "early next year".

"With any major service provider, you don ' t really make major service introductions in the mix of the holidays," Miller said, when asked to elaborate. "And as soon as you run into the end of the year... even retailers run into lockdown at the end of October."

The Cox-TiVo product, however, will leverage the TiVo hardware. Because of this, development time is dramatically reduced, Miller said; the Cox-TiVo product will ship in 2011, he said.

Goal executives have said that they believe that the hard work will pay off in the long run.

"It involves a heavy amount of r&d spending to put some of that in place, aim at the same point, we get to leverage pre-existing work as we go forward and benefit from increased opportunities that flow, distribution" Tom Rogers, TiVo's chief executive, said during the company' s second - quarter conference call in August.

Google, for its part, has signed DISH Network as a partner for its Google TV box.Both DISH and EchoStar are engaged in patent litigation with TiVo, qui a swung TiVo ' s way and back in favor of DISH.For his part, Miller said that TiVo considers itself as a primary interface; users will be required to switch inputs to access either the revamped Apple TV, the Boxee Box, or the Google TV devices.

PARC enables 40: the 'startup oldest' Preps for the future.

It's not that far-fetched to say that as Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center celebrates its 40th anniversary this week, so too does Silicon Valley.

Originally founded in 1969 by Xerox chief scientist Jack Goldman, PARC quickly became the incubator for VLSI circuit design, solid-state lasers, the computer mouse, and the concept of a personal computer – and, on the downside, the first Internet worm.

On Thursday, PARC will celebrate its anniversary with a private event in Silicon Valley, allowing reporters, alumni, and other technology veterans a look at the technologies upon which PARC was built, and those that the facility hopes will serve as the foundation for the next 40 years.

In 2008, PARC also opened its doors to allow outsiders in to view its technology, including a reusable copy-machine paper that did not use ink or toner; a year later, PARC invited companies through those doors as well, forming Startup@PARC, an effort to introduce Silicon Valley startups and PARC researchers to one another.

As one of the centerpieces of Silicon Valley, PARC has driven and reacted to change, inspiring and being inspired by generations of startups. We sat down with Tamara St. Claire, vice president of global business development for PARC, to find out how PARC has moved from a research house to an "innovation center," and on what technologies PARC is placing its bets.

The interview has been slightly edited for clarity and, in places, length.

PCM: First off, how would you describe your role at PARC?

St. Claire: My title is vice president of global business development. I was hired to complete the journey that PARC started in 2002 toward the commercial innovation center. So I actually joke that I work for the world's largest and oldest startup. We have access to funds via Xerox, creative destruction of projects they started and terminated, and entrepreneurial researchers.

Our original mission was to invent the office of the future, and that came with a charter that becoming architects of information. And we were tasked with developing a radical new digital future for Xerox. And we were kind of a gravitational center for all of these interrelated projects. And then we spun out of Xerox in 2002, where now we have many more partners and commercial routes. And this really multiplied the core expertise

And so we like to say that PARC's in the business of breakthroughs today. We like to bring to market groundbreaking new technologies with our clients.

And the division that I'm helping PARC to realize is becoming the source of innovation for much of the enterprises across a broad range of industries, somewhat different from our original task. We have an interdisciplinary research. That approach combines creative imagination, scientific investigation, and business investment, which I help lead. PARC invests in creative technologies, and our goal is to transform and to create new markets.

How would you describe PARC today – as a technology incubator?

I think of it as a unique innovation center with the ability to help transform and create new markets, according to our vision. We have a commercial focus, we understand the value chain and technology transfer.

As you mentioned, PARC became an independent subsidiary in 2002. This may be before your time, but when did PARC realize that it had to commercialize these technologies, rather than just invent them?

I think that's from a Xerox perspective. In 2002, there was a realization that PARC's core competencies and expertise could be realized across many more industries than what Xerox was in. That would probably be the PARC perspective.

A number of other companies seem to have taken the same approach. I've noticed Intel's Developer Forum, for example, evolve from something of a technology showcase to more of an example of what they're hoping to bring to market five or ten years in the future. But PARC has had this legacy of pure research. Can you give me an example of the dichotomy between pure research and projects that can be commercialized? If (and this is a horrible example) someone wants to devote years to underwater basket weaving, who tells that person, "You know, this probably isn't going to pan out"?

You actually found out the new domain we're going to be announcing at the 40th. No, just kidding. It's a really great question.

When I came in, one of the things that I worked on was a portfolio management tool, and what this tool does is that it looks at all our programs and projects across a pretty common Boston 2x2 matrix covering new technologies, existing technologies, new markets, and existing markets. And it maps these programs across these domains. We really think it's important to nurture research. Research and people are PARC's biggest asset. We look at our commercial team as enabling and supporting that asset. And we see ourselves as the buffer, and lines of communication to the outside world, to make sure there's a market connection, and to make sure that our researchers are nurtured and that their ideas can reach the market, and we see ourselves in a service capacity to that asset. So the portfolio management tool, laid across our research programs, what we've done is first of all, design management of those assets, in a unique way depending on where those assets fit in our portfolio. So in our options, which is new technology and new markets, we manage those in a VC style manner. And if it's an unknown technology in an unknown market, we make sure that we closely look at milestones and metrics associated with business outcomes and technical outcomes, and meter the investments appropriately.

So is the model within PARC similar to an academic environment, where there are proposals put forth, with a commitment of resources to that? And is the commercialization team involved in that?

PARC's model for innovation – we certainly like to align our research across a set of domains that will give us deep industry knowledge, market knowledge. Going back to the industry management tool, Mark, if we have a core set of expertise and a core set of knowledge, if we have existing technology and existing markets, we should be able to project that expertise out into other markets, so adjacent markets, and we call that scouting. But we should be able to to take that knowledge of the markets, and understand what the next-gen technology is. So if you think about how ideation occurs here, we try to drive it from those understandings. We also try to allow ideation to occur in its natural form. As you remember, from the very beginning, a lot of wonderful things came out as well, but it was directed across a vision. We feel like we have a vision that also guides ideation. But again, we have an amount, or a percentage of time, or investment, so we let researchers ideate, unfettered.

And ideate means…?

Do research on areas of interest, work on a proposal, without it being constrained to strategic reviews, think about new opportunities, read, go to conferences outside the program, that are managed in the portfolio process.

So scouting involves taking technologies that the department is familiar with, such as photovoltaic technology, and expanding it into new markets? Or is it looking at a target market and saying, okay, we need to develop expertise in that area?

It sounds like it might be a bit of a hybrid of both. Scouting is taking an expertise and a technology that you understand and figuring out whether this technology has a fit in another market. We may ask the question, does it fit, or does it need a tweak to fit a special application?

I can give you a couple of examples that are really rather unique within PARC. One of them is hydrodynamic separation. And this started with an understanding of how to move toner particles and understanding the physics behind that. And what we did was move this application of moving toner particles, and take that to figure out how to take dirty water and separate it in two effluent streams. One that is a concentrated stream, removing particulate and particles, and clean effluent, came from this knowledge of moving toner particles around in this cartridge.

As I was listening to that example, I was struck by how it's both meaningful as well as potentially lucrative; it's applicable to both First World and Third World countries. But in terms of what I deal with on a day-to-day basis, the hot startups aren't dealing with separating effluent water streams, or managing ink particles within streams, they're managing somewhat ephemeral social interaction, just taking the same relationships we've had for thousands of years, and adapting them to another medium. How do you reconcile what you're doing as meaningful research with the fact that the most lucrative startups out there aren't in the same vein?

That's an interesting perspective. Our researchers don't want to do something unless they think it's interesting, and they think it's impactful.

One of the things about our researchers is we have a very collaborative, inquisitive culture, and they are very passionate about their technologies making contributions that impact the world. So if you look at the hydrodynamic separation analogy for example, there are a lot of interesting applications that impact the world. One of them that we're exploring is being able to bring clean water to emerging countries… It's very simple…it's very low power, it's one of those Occam's Razor phenomena that's elegantly simple. That type of approach in technology to bring clean water in countries where there's lot of issues a really exciting application for the technology we have inside [PARC]. For people in the Valley, it really is an existing technology that we have been able to make other applications from. And we're in talks with a number of different of governments and Fortune 50 companies that are very interested in taking something like this to market, because not only of the business implications but also the social implications.

What subjects drive your research? Some of PARC's focus areas seem to be a natural fit for Silicon Valley: IC interconnects, novel electronics, networking, even natural language question answering. But others, such as glucose monitoring and drug discovery, seem a little farther afield.

I don't know how much you know about my background, but I came from biotech. I don't know if you know where biotech's hubs are around the world are, but within the U.S., one could say Boston, San Diego, but definitely Silicon Valley. I know your background is in the PC and in computing, but… Silicon Valley is a biotech hub. In 2005, I think it was, the organization decided to take some of its knowledge around arrays, materials and being able to measure things and ways that they could exploit this knowledge in other related industries. So I think that you could say that the foundation was there, the critical mass was there, and even the network externally, in thinking about Silicon Valley as a biotech hub was there as well.

Within the different focus areas that PARC has worked on, is there any one area that has proven more lucrative than the others?

Yes, there is definitely…I think it's fair to say that yes, but it's not a static question. I think if we go back to the portfolio management tool, we look at our investments, we update the business plans regularly, but we also need to think about the lifespan and the lifecycle of the technology, and that's something that we're getting much much better at, and that's looking at when the technology peaks, what we expect in terms of returns and when its expiration date is.

We certainly think that we have areas that we think are lucrative, we have areas that we think are nascent, that are going to be big hits, and then areas like any company we think is a cash cow and that we need to watch its maturity cycle.

The obvious followup: can you give me an example of a technology that you think is nascent, and one that you think is approaching its prime or a bit past?

The two I think that we think are our big bets are content-centric networking…We think that this has a chance. These are very lofty goals, to replace the backbone of the current Internet. It can sit on top of the backbone of the Internet right now; it looks at moving content around based on naming conventions, and there are certain operations around that we already have traction on. Hopefully you have heard a little about our NSF grant; we are the only industrial client of the eight members of this $8 million grant, and we think that this is just moving up its curve in terms of going through to proof of concept to getting market traction, and will be a big win for PARC.

Hydrodynamic separation is also another one; we talked about being able to deliver clean water to emerging markets, but there are several others: one is algae dewatering for biofuels, and the other is defract, being able to turn water around from oil exploration, to being able clean that water back up and put it back into the exploration system, or get rid of the water and meet specification, and municipal water treatment. And those are two of our largest investments, and two of the big bets that we think are about PARC's future.

And something that's past its prime?

You know, we always have to be careful on how we name them. We have a lot of technologies that we have a lot of maturity in 40 years of our investments, and one could certainly look at amorphous silicon and large-area electronics.

Now when you talk about big bets, what are we talking about in terms of money?

In PARC's scale, it's significant, and if you think about it in relationship to startups in the Valley, I think it's on par.

During your time at PARC – and take it back as far as you like – has PARC turned a profit from those investments?

Yes, definitely. You've given me an opportunity to step in and brag a little bit. Since we spun off in 2002, we've garnered over $100 million in licensing revenue alone from or IP portfolio to licensing. We sold Powerset, the technology that came from our natural language group, a more mature technology – our natural language research is about as old as PARC as well – we sold that to Microsoft for a significant amount of money.

We've also begun over 30 spinouts and startups from PARC.

And what determines if a technology is licensed, developed with a partner company, or spun out as a separate company?

That's a great question. We have a really good business development team, in our intellectual capital group. We talked about portfolio management, and I think I alluded to strategic reviews. Each of our programs when it gets to a certain size needs to have a business plan around it and that business plan looks at several different scenarios where we can capture value. It's really about looking at the industry, the technology, and several different go-to-market scenarios, and trying to understand which scenario, or which pathway, releases the most value for PARC.

And is this all done in house, or do you work with other angel investors or traditional venture capital firms?

A lot of it is done in house, but we believe that the relationships we have in the Valley is a really strong asset to us. So we don't think we know everything. So we use our network in the VC community, our network of industry experts, just like a small startup does. People are really hungry for validation, confirmation, and outside information, and we work those networks just as a startup does.

That's interesting, because one of PARC's reported advantages was its relative isolation, free from corporate oversight. These days, it's better to be interconnected.

Well, you know, it's interesting. I think those are two different phenomena: how beholden are you to your parent company, and how interconnected are you to shape, validate, and confirm your ideas.

I think the other idea I wanted to ask you is that, within Silicon Valley, there are a vast number of tiny startups developing a vast number of technologies, all engaged in a sort of Darwinian model where some survive, and others fold. This may seem a bit confrontational, but is PARC, as a monolithic research house, a bit of a dinosaur? Or does it have an advantage these startups lack?

That's also a great question, and not confrontational at all.

Everyone in the Valley is facing this concept of open innovation and either embracing it or discarding it. We see ourselves as really uniquely positioned here. If you read folks talking about open innovation, the new paradigm of open innovation is around the nexus of government funding, university research and industrial collaboration. And then you take that context and that backdrop and think, how do startups play and how do they participate in open innovation. And I think PARC is uniquely positioned; we have government grants, we collaborate with universities, and our client-services business is very healthy in collaborating with industrial partners. And we see ourselves as being uniquely positioned because of many things that I'll touch on, to take advantage of this nexus of open innovation where startup companies have to be uniquely singularly focused on just getting their concept out to market.

We also feel that with access to funds from Xerox, with our commercial partners, and being tapped into so many aspects of the market, as well as our history of commercial success, that we're unique.
